Graffiti art should be seen as democracy indicator.🙂
If we can see in any city a lot of graffiti which is made freely, It means, democratic rights are expanded.
If somehow minorities, subculture communities can symbolize their demands on the streets of the city. We can understand that people are not under oppression.
But nowadays graffiti art is being seen as a decorating factor by anti-democratic governments to raise tourism income.
Generally using national myths are depicted and drawings are perfectionist and attractiveness. But we see on drawings of Keith Harring childish challenge, unlike perfectionism.
In my opinion, defending the reality of daily life against big narratives is a challenge. I saw that on Keith Haring works.
I agree, Berkay. Being able to say things that might not always be spoken about in a public forum is an example of democracy. I like those two examples shared. The one in Argentina is especially good. I also think that street art (and all art really) has the ability to be able to transverse languages. For example, I can understand the simple cartoon without needing to know Spanish. This is why I really admire the work of Keith Haring. It was so quick, yet it had a huge impact on the world. Keith Haring's drawings are so global and understandable by everyone. Because his drawings are like a part of the collective memory of humankind.
His drawings look like primitive cave drawings, yet it's the story of modern people. Also, he made art in public places as well. Subway, streets are like caves of modern people. Regardless of the country, everyone can interpret Keith Haring's drawings' context. Because almost everyone lives in similar capitalist societies.
And we know which one is representing real people, which one representing the ruler. Most of time, defending daily life and doing that by simplistic drawings or using collages can be a rebel approach.

I would like to give an example.
